Welcome!
You might see Mary Kay or M.K. on my books, but most people just call me "Kay".
What do I like to write about? Kids mostly, and an occasional adult or two. Even animals. You see, all of us have problems...hopes...and dreams. And everyone has choices to make. I bet you even chose which color of socks to put on today, didn't you? Did you choose to do your homework last night? Socks and homework. Some choices are really important, others not so much. The choices we make define us and tell the world who we are. Developing a story around problems and then having my characters solve them is why I write.
Where do I get my ideas? My inspiration? From kids like you. Then there are the strange, wonderful, and sometimes funny things animals do. Who wouldn't want to know why a rabbit stacks waffles on his head? I sure would.
I find story ideas and inspiration everywhere: from books, in nature, a trip to the grocery store, from watching TV, watching a movie, reading a magazine, and even from overhearing a conversation. (Shh! Don't tell anyone!) Ideas are everywhere. You just have to keep all your senses open to receive them.
Maybe by reading my stories and learning how my characters face their problems, they'll inspire you to seek new ways to face yours. Stay tuned--I have a lot more stories up my sleeve!
What did I do before I became an author? You might say, I've had my hand in creating things all my life: Three terrific kids (and six grandchildren--my two sons helped there). As an Interior Designer for almost twenty years I helped people pick out wallpaper and paint. Those might not seem too important to you, but to the people who lived in those houses or worked in those offices, that wallpaper and paint was pretty important. I also designed, owned, and managed two restaurants. Boy, could I tell some stories from there. Oh yes. I also taught school for a while: Kindergarten, second, fourth, and then fifth grade. I really enjoyed teaching. Come to think of it, there are a couple other trades I dabbled in (which nobody cares to know about)--so I won't bother going into them.
Teachers and Parents: On my Books/Reviews page, I've included some questions for lively discussions. I hope these prompt even more.
